Employee Monitor Glossary

Honey net Project

A non profit volunteer organization that is dedicated to computer security and research and computer information sharing. They first developed the operational honey net – a network set up
with intentional vulnerabilities for the purpose of attracting attackers – they are promoting the deployment of further honey nets.
In the official website they are talking about their purpose to raise the awarness about the threats in the net and to share information about attackers with security community.
Employee Monitoring can help you find those attackers and see if you got one in your office.

Insider Threat

Hacker – this can be an employee of the company you are working at – the meaning can also apply to an outside person who acts like a company employee with false credentials.
The hacker finds a way to access the computer system or network of the company and can do what ever he wants – steal information, delete or even insert a virus on all the networks computers.
In many casses the inside threat is caused by an ex-employee who felt he was fired for the wrong reason and wants to get revenge.
The four step that happens:
The hacker is able to gain access to the system.
Second the hacker investigates the habits of the network in order to learn where the most vulnerable points are and where he can create the most damage.
Third the hacker sets up a work station from which he runs his activity and finally the act of hacking itself takes place.
In order to prevent it you can use a Employee Monitor and use it to track any hacking alerts or unusual activities on the company computers.
Some employee monitor solutions can be used to protect you from unusual activities that may be running on your computers.

Dumpster Diving

As it says – search for information in the users dumpster – from temp files to "deleted" file and in the recycle bin – any place you can find information for free.
Even an innocent phone list or a calendar can be used to access the computer network.
You can monitor your workers habits using Employee Monitoring in order to understand what type of information they are saving or "deleting" and then establish a disposal policy. Using this policy you tell all the workers that all papers need to be shredded in a cross cut shredder and that all storage media must be wiped or formatted (thoroughly erased).

Shoulder Surfing

An observation technique that people use to look at an employees computer over the employees shoulder in order to get information. This technique of shoulder surfing is most effective in order to get information in crowded places when the position of the employee is close to the observer. This can be used to collect information such as PIN Number at ATM machines or even calling cards.
To prevent shoulder surfing, experts recommend that you shield paperwork or your keypad from view by using your body.
Employee monitoring systems will allow you to check which one of your workers is using personal data and using it in an unsafe mode.
You can then prevent this by using different security methods.
